plus zero minus one is a space for examining the relationship between the functionality and vulnerability of beings. Humans resemble objects and vice versa; we behave in ways that are influenced by the expectations of others. We are beloved, function, fulfill, malfunction, fade, and self-alienate, but we still desire to contribute to and be a part of what we cherish. This series of works has started from questions about existence: Why do we willingly serve to achieve a certain outcome? How do we experience success and failure along the way? How should we embrace all of our vulnerabilities and insecurities? I explore these questions by looking into my surroundings: an urban space built by humans for productivity.
In the countless patterns and orders in the urban space, I discover and render softness and intimacy. When we look closer into the built environment, we can excavate diverse components of life: habits, humor, love, time, and (mis)understanding, to name a few. A pattern is an embodiment of efficiency, but it also can be a ritual. Honoring ordinary moments and mundane objects and giving birth to ambiguous objects are my way of celebrating our existence. By believing in the power of repetition as a gesture of care, this show manifests my commitment to care.
